U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario, located on the U.S.-Canada border, to "Lake America" has drawn criticism even from within his own ruling Republican Party.

Phil Scott, the Republican governor of Vermont, posted on the social media platform X regarding the renaming of the lake, directly criticizing President Trump as being "childish and disappointing."

Governor Scott pointed out, "We need to find ways to strengthen the U.S. and Canadian economies through negotiation. Escalating tensions does not help American or Canadian families and businesses."

Vermont is also a region expected to suffer damages from the tariff war between the United States and Canada.

The opposition Democratic Party reacted with statements such as, "It is absurd and deeply infuriating."

Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state who ran as the Democratic candidate in the 2016 presidential election and lost to President Trump, also criticized the renaming attempt by briefly posting "It's Lake Ontario" on X.

As President Trump's renaming of the lake further exacerbates the tariff war between the U.S. and Canada, outlooks suggest it will also be a tough fight for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

This is because Canada's burden could increase due to the impact of the tariff war, and CNN pointed out that "while Prime Minister Carney is being praised in a moment of crisis, he may ultimately end up satisfying no one."
