Controversy continues to brew in the political arena over the incompetence of the police exposed by the case of the late Chang Mi-ran. The Democratic Party has repeatedly emphasized accelerating police reform, while the People Power Party has fired back, arguing that public safety is being threatened by the abolition of prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights.

The Democratic Party launched its police reform promotion task force yesterday (Aug. 25), and today raised its voice, vowing to eradicate the six major evils of the police, such as protecting their own and covering up cases.

[Park Sun-won / Supreme Council Member of the Democratic Party]: Internal police surveillance, looking the other way, perfunctory questioning, covering things up, and human rights violations will never be tolerated.

However, the party drew a line against the case of the late Chang Mi-ran expanding into the issue of prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights, which are set to be abolished in October.

[Kim Min-seok / Leader of the Democratic Party]: (The false closure of the Jeju missing person case) is drawing public outrage, but contrary to some claims, this happened while the prosecution's supplementary investigation rights are currently in operation.

The People Power Party pointed out that the Jang Yun-gi case and the Jeju missing person case alone show that the public is suffering damage from the deprivation of prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights.

[Jang Dong-hyeok / Leader of the People Power Party]: Public safety and lives are being threatened. The damage from the deprivation of supplementary investigation rights falls squarely on the citizens.

Regarding President Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party's emphasis on "police reform," the party sharpened its criticism by demanding that they first appoint a National Police Agency commissioner-general, a post that has been vacant for one year and eight months.

[Jeong Jeom-sik / Floor Leader of the People Power Party]: Before shouting about grand police reforms, we urge you to appoint a National Police Agency commissioner-general first.

The Democratic Party countered, stating, "The vacancy of the commissioner-general position is a consequence of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's December 3 emergency martial law."
