A photo showing a single piece of bread priced at up to 16,000 won has spread online, drawing an outpouring of reactions criticizing that bread prices in South Korea are too expensive.

Recently, a post titled "Is this bakery pricing right?" was uploaded to an online community.

The author posted a photo of price tags showing bread sold for 15,000 won and 16,000 won, along with the remark, "Who on earth would buy and eat that?"

Among netizens, reactions varied. Some said, "I'd rather pitch in a bit more money and eat chicken" or "They need to drop the number 1 in front," while others expressed the view that given already rising market rates, it is not particularly expensive, noting that "just picking up a few items at a bakery costs tens of thousands of won."

In fact, domestic bakery prices have been on a steady rise.

According to a report released by a domestic accounting firm in May of this year, South Korea's bakery price index stood at 138 last year, which was higher than Japan at 126, the United States at 126, and France at 120.

The analysis indicates that the price level of the domestic bakery market is relatively high compared to major countries.
