A female Chinese exchange student in her 20s has been found dead six days after she was reported missing in Daegu.

The Gyeongsan Police Station in Gyeongsangbuk-do announced that they have arrested and are currently investigating a man in his 30s, identified as B, on charges of causing the death of a 25-year-old Chinese female university student, A.

According to police, B is suspected of killing A, an acquaintance.

The deceased student, A, was enrolled at a graduate school in Gyeongsan, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and entered the country on the 14th to receive her graduate school completion certificate.

She had been missing since the night of the 20th, the day before she was scheduled to receive her completion certificate, when she lost contact with her family.

Police executed an arrest warrant for B on the street in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, at around 7:30 PM on this day and apprehended him, subsequently discovering A dead inside B's nearby residence.

Police plan to conduct an autopsy as it is difficult to estimate the exact time and cause of death from the condition of A's body alone.

Police are currently investigating B regarding the motive and specific circumstances of the crime.

They also plan to secure additional evidence related to the crime by conducting a search and seizure of B's residence and other locations.

A's disappearance became known after posts presumed to have been written by A's family were posted successively on local Chinese social media (SNS), and students from the same school as A posted similar content on domestic SNS.

Police received a missing person report at around 7:05 PM on the 21st, the day after A lost contact with her family.

The case was initially filed as a simple missing person incident.

During the investigation, police interviewed B, the initial person who reported the disappearance, as a reference witness, but grew suspicious of criminal involvement after spotting inconsistencies in his statements.

Police plan to apply for an arrest warrant for B following further questioning.
