Regarding the false closure of a long-term missing person case in Jeju, the Korean National Police Agency announced today (August 25) that it has relieved all four members of the command line at the Jeju Seobu Police Station of their duties.

Those affected include the former chief of the Jeju Seobu Police Station who was in office when the case was first received, the current chief, the head of the detective division, and the head of the missing persons team.

While holding them accountable for their command of the case handling, the National Police Agency is also conducting an inspection investigation to verify facts regarding their supervisory responsibilities.

Police Inspector A, affiliated with the Jeju Seobu Police Station, is suspected of falsely reporting that contact had been made with Jang Mi-ran, who went missing in May, and closing the case.

The body presumed to be Jang was found yesterday (August 24), 104 days after her disappearance, at a palm tree farm about 400 meters away from her accommodation.

Inspector A was also found to have falsely closed a case involving a man in his 60s who was reported missing last month.

That man was also found dead on August 22, two days after the case was re-reported.

Police are conducting a comprehensive investigation into 298 missing person reports handled and closed by Inspector A.
