South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun met with Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco today (the 24th) to discuss ways to strengthen middle-power solidarity and expand cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI).

During the South Korea-Mexico foreign ministerial meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs complex in Seoul this morning, Minister Cho said, "As global economic uncertainties grow, ranging from supply chains and energy to food and security, bilateral relations have become more important than ever."

He added, "By strengthening the institutional foundation for trade and investment and diversifying cooperation into fields such as AI, space, education, and the defense industry, we will be able to realize the full potential of our bilateral relations."

Minister Velasco emphasized, "Both nations have a responsibility to contribute to shaping the international order in which we participate," noting that bilateral relations are grounded in shared principles such as democracy, human rights, and the protection of international law.

He went on to state that the two countries have cooperated within the United Nations, the Group of 20 (G20), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and MIKTA to "reflect the perspectives of middle powers in building a more inclusive and representative international order."

The two sides also noted that President Lee Jae-myung accepted an invitation from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in May to visit Mexico.

Minister Velasco remarked that President Lee's visit to Mexico will "provide a clear direction for bilateral dialogue."
