In an instant, the entire road transforms into a massive pool of mud.

This is Tocopilla, a coastal city in northern Chile.

An unusual and sudden downpour struck the normally arid desert region, which rarely sees rain, triggering an aluvión, or debris flow.

This phenomenon occurs when heavy rains cause water levels to surge rapidly, mixing soil, rocks, and mud from the hillside and rushing down valleys at high speeds.

Due to the immense speed of the incoming mudslides, about 1,200 households suffered flooding damage, and roads were cut off, leading to continuous incidents of isolation in various areas.

Local authorities immediately declared a state of emergency and issued evacuation orders for residents.
