Today (Aug. 20), central regions experienced relief from the heat due to rain clouds, while sweltering heat intensified in the southern regions.
Tomorrow, South Korea will remain under the edge of the North Pacific high-pressure system, bringing rain to the greater Seoul area and Gangwon Province, with showers expected mainly focused on the southern regions.
Rain in the central regions is expected to continue from early tomorrow morning through the morning of the day after tomorrow (Aug. 22).
Looking at the expected rainfall amounts, 10 to 60 mm of rain is forecasted for Incheon and northern Gyeonggi Province, while 5 to up to 50 mm is expected in Seoul and other central areas. Showers in regions south of Chungcheong Province could pour down strongly in localized areas with up to 50 mm.
Meanwhile, since this weekend marks Cheoseo (one of the 24 solar terms indicating the end of summer), you might be wondering if it will get a bit cooler. However, once the rain stops, the high-pressure system is expected to expand further, slightly intensifying the heat.
Still, given the timing of the season, extreme heat like that seen in early August is not anticipated.
Meanwhile, heatwave advisories for South Jeolla and South Gyeongsang provinces have been upgraded one level to heatwave warnings.
With tropical night advisories also in effect for the southern regions, tonight is expected to remain sweltering.
Seoul will record a lowest temperature of 24°C (75°F), falling short of the tropical night threshold, but high humidity will make it feel muggy. Tomorrow, daytime temperatures will reach 30°C (86°F) in Seoul and 35°C (95°F) in Gwangju.
Next week, weather variability will be high due to numerous weather variables such as typhoons.
Inland areas may experience showers.
