▲ People Power Party to File Complaint Against Special Prosecutor Kwon Chang-young for Law Distortion
The People Power Party stated that the indictment of its lawmakers Na Kyung-won, Kim Kihyun, Yoon Sang-hyun, and Kwon Young-jin by Special Prosecutor Kwon Chang-young is an "abuse of indictment authority and an outrage," and announced plans to file a complaint against him for law distortion.
Floor Leader Jung Jeom-sik made the remarks during a general meeting of lawmakers held at the National Assembly this morning (the 20th), stating, "As Special Prosecutor Kwon Chang-young approaches the end of his operation, he is releasing a massive wave of indictments right before closing shop."
Floor Leader Jung pointed out, "The case in which the special prosecutor indicted the four lawmakers is a matter that even Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok, who spearheaded the mobilization of insurrection charges, concluded was meaningless after investigation." He added, "The special prosecutor claims that 'there was no physical scuffle with investigative authorities, but they formed a scrum.' Can you say there was an act of violence when there was no physical clash?"
He continued, "Furthermore, there were numerous lawmakers and citizens together at the scene, and the fact that only four of them were selectively targeted is clear evidence of a politically motivated targeted indictment," adding, "Our party will file a complaint against Special Prosecutor Kwon Chang-young, the perpetrator of this indictment outrage, for law distortion."
The People Power Party also decided during the general meeting to refer Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kim Jun-hwan to the National Assembly's Special Committee on Ethics over remarks he reportedly made targeting People Power Party lawmaker Park Choong-kwon, a North Korean defector, calling him someone who used to shout "Long live Kim Il-sung."
Regarding the constitutional amendment issue, which has gained renewed attention due to a golf meeting between President Lee Jae-myung and some lawmakers from the ruling party, Floor Leader Jung stated, "Our party has no choice but to decline the proposal for constitutional amendment until President Lee Jae-myung's five ongoing trials resume."
Floor Leader Jung stated, "Our party has consistently maintained a clear position that we cannot respond to the government and ruling party's proposal for constitutional amendment unless President Lee Jae-myung makes a promise that 'there will be no consecutive terms,'" adding, "However, we have fully confirmed that the president has no such intention."
