The Vietnamese national football team, led by head coach Kim Sang-sik, has advanced to the final of the 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup after a resounding victory over Malaysia.
Vietnam secured a 2-0 win against Malaysia in the second leg of the tournament semifinals held at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam, today.
Having also won the first leg away from home 2-0, Vietnam advanced to the final with a 4-0 aggregate score.
Their opponent in the final, which will also be played in a home-and-away format, is their arch-rival Thailand.
Vietnam will play the away match on the 22nd and the home match on the 26th.
Thailand recorded one win and one loss in their semifinal against Singapore, but advanced with a 4-3 edge in goal difference.
Vietnam claimed victory thanks to a multi-goal performance by naturalized Brazilian forward Nguyen Xuan Son in the 17th and 44th minutes of the second half.
With this win, Vietnam extended its undefeated streak to 24 matches (21 wins and 3 draws).
Vietnam continues to rewrite its national record for the longest unbeaten streak in A-matches, surpassing the previous mark of 18 games.
The Hyundai Cup, held every two years, determines the strongest football nation in Southeast Asia and is often called the "World Cup of Southeast Asia."
Formerly known by names such as the Suzuki Cup and Mitsubishi Cup, the tournament's title sponsor changed to Hyundai for its 30th anniversary.
As the champions of the previous 2024 tournament, Vietnam is now aiming for consecutive titles and its fourth championship overall.
