▲ Suspect in the 'Seongnam Retaliatory Murder'
A man in his 50s who committed retaliatory murder out of resentment toward his ex-lover, who had reported him for stalking, has been handed over to the prosecution.
The Seongnam Jungwon Police Station in Gyeonggi Province transferred suspect A, who was detained on charges of violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes (retaliatory murder), to the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office today (August 19).
Emerging from the Seongnam Sujeong Police Station detention center this morning, suspect A had his face covered with a mask and a hat.
He boarded a transport vehicle bound for the prosecution without answering any questions from reporters, such as his motive for the crime.
Suspect A was arrested for allegedly killing a woman in her 60s, with whom he had broken up after a four-year relationship, using a weapon he had prepared in advance at around 3:00 a.m. on July 5 in Sangdaewon-dong, Jungwon-gu, Seongnam.
Investigations showed that he planned the crime—such as purchasing a weapon—out of resentment after being reported for stalking by the victim and facing potential punishment.
Consequently, police applied the charge of retaliatory murder under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, which carries a heavier statutory penalty than general murder under the Criminal Act.
Meanwhile, the suspect's personal information was not disclosed immediately due to an objection raised by him.
Previously, considering the gravity of the case, the police held a deliberation committee on the disclosure of personal information of specific serious crime suspects on August 18 and decided to disclose suspect A's name, age, and mugshot, in accordance with the Act on the Disclosure of Personal Information of Specific Serious Crime Suspects.
However, as suspect A objected to this, the police decided to disclose his identity on the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency website for 30 days starting on August 25, after a grace period of five days or more stipulated by relevant regulations.
