The 60-day negotiation deadline promised by the United States and Iran when they signed a post-war memorandum of understanding has ended without any results. With both sides stating that the memorandum no longer holds any meaning, they have entered an endless standoff.

On August 17, U.S. time, as the 60-day negotiation deadline specified in the memorandum of understanding on ending the war signed with Iran expired, President Trump asserted that he has no intention of extending it and demanded that Iran surrender unconditionally.

Regarding Oman, which is discussing management plans for the Strait of Hormuz with Iran, he reportedly issued a warning laced with profanity, stating that Oman would be bombed if it obstructed the United States.

The New York Times assessed that President Trump expressed his own frustration over his inability to end the war, and within the U.S. government, concerns are reportedly growing that ally Oman is leaning toward Iran.

Trump has even brought up the idea of declaring the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory without considering its feasibility.

[Donald Trump / U.S. President: I like the idea of declaring the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory. We can certainly do it, and we have absolute control over the strait. That might give Iran a headache.]

Iran stated that negotiations could not even begin due to widespread violations of the agreement by the United States, declaring that the "60-day discussion" contained in the memorandum of understanding no longer has any meaning.

While Trump claimed there is a covert contact channel with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a spokesperson for the Revolutionary Guard dismissed this, stating that no talks whatsoever are underway with the United States.

As diplomatic solutions face difficulties, including reports of statements from high-ranking Iranian officials indicating a shift in their military posture toward the U.S. to an all-out offensive, international oil prices surged by more than 2%.

President Trump's approval rating plummeted to 33%, the lowest since the launch of his second term.
