People Power Party Leader Jang Dong-hyeok and Floor Leader Chung Jeom-sik have completely canceled their scheduled National Assembly agendas for today (August 18) to visit Geoje and Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang Province, which have been hit hard by torrential rains, to inspect the damage situation.
Leader Jang announced through a media notice around midnight that he was canceling existing schedules, including attending the memorial service for the 17th anniversary of the passing of former President Kim Dae-jung, to visit the flood-stricken sites.
In the morning, Leader Jang is scheduled to visit an apartment complex in Okpo-dong, Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, which suffered landslide damage the previous day, to inspect the landslide site.
Afterwards, he plans to meet with affected residents at a nearby elementary school being used as an evacuee shelter to listen to their difficulties, and also visit the site of a ground subsidence (sinkhole) accident.
Floor Leader Chung Jeom-sik, whose constituency includes Tongyeong and Goseong in South Gyeongsang Province, has also canceled key National Assembly schedules, including the floor strategy meeting, to accompany the flood site inspection.
After finishing the inspection in Geoje, they plan to visit other nearby flood-damaged areas such as Tongyeong in the afternoon to check the progress of recovery efforts.
