Torrential downpours have also battered Tongyeong, right next to Geoje. A woman in her 60s was rescued after being buried in a landslide, while roads and homes were submerged.

A person can be seen barely lying prone under a blanket amidst a pile of mud, holding onto a bucket.
This is the moment when the Coast Guard rescued resident A, a woman in her 60s who was buried by a landslide on Gonrido Island in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, at around 5:00 a.m. yesterday (August 17).
The rescue operation lasted for nearly an hour and a half, and A was transported to a nearby hospital suffering from injuries including a leg fracture and hypothermia.
At the time, Tongyeong was being hammered by torrential rain reaching 51.3 millimeters per hour.

Roads in various areas were paralyzed due to the heavy rain that poured overnight.

A truck is stuck in a pothole after asphalt roads cracked and caved in due to rainwater rushing fiercely like a river.
Traffic heading toward Daejeon on the Tongyeong-Daejeon Expressway at the Tongyeong Toll Gate was temporarily restricted for a time in the afternoon as crews worked to clear mud and debris that had collapsed onto the road.

Heavy rain damage continued in Busan and Jeju as well. In the Deokcheon-dong area of Busan, commercial banners and signs fell down, while in Gupyeong-dong, a roughly 1-ton boulder washed down by rainwater blocked a road, causing traffic inconveniences.
Pumping operations to drain water from flooded homes continued through the night across Seogwipo and Jeju cities in Jeju.

As of 6:00 p.m. yesterday, the total rainfall recorded across the southern coast included 453.7 mm in Tongyeong, 105 mm in Busan, 103 mm in Jinju, and 88 mm in Changwon.
At one point, over 140 roads and bridges were restricted in areas such as Sacheon, Goseong, and Tongyeong, and 40 residents from 22 households evacuated.
