A U.S. Navy destroyer reportedly suffered a mechanical failure that left it without power for four days in the South China Sea last month.

Citing a statement from the U.S. 7th Fleet, CNN reported on the 17th local time that the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold experienced a generator-related mechanical failure on June 24 while conducting routine operations in the Indo-Pacific region.

The breakdown left the USS Benfold without self-propulsion capabilities, while also disrupting onboard galley facilities, restrooms, air conditioning, and drinking water supplies, according to Commander Matthew Comer, a spokesperson for the 7th Fleet.

While the Navy did not disclose the exact location of the incident, naval specialty outlet USNI News and CNN reported that it occurred in the South China Sea.

During the period when the USS Benfold lost power, nearby U.S. Navy vessels provided support, with the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls delivering cooked food.

The U.S. Navy explained that the USS Benfold was towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines for repairs and returned to duty after completing repairs on the 8th.

The USS Benfold is a vessel frequently assigned to the carrier strike group of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.

The USS George Washington is currently heading to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The U.S. Navy did not disclose whether the USS Benfold traveled with the USS George Washington carrier strike group to the waters near Iran.

The power-loss incident involving the USS Benfold is the second such accident for a U.S. Navy destroyer in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility, following the USS Higgins in May.
