Rainfall exceeding 120 millimeters per hour is difficult to fathom with numbers alone. However, the report videos sent in by our viewers vividly capture just how terrifying extreme downpours can be. In Geoje, a sudden deluge submerged buildings and even washed away cars.

Early this morning (August 17), a street in Okpo-dong, Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do.
Muddy water covers the entire road, rushing down with terrifying force, and a man trying to pull a vehicle out from the road is trapped by the current, unable to move an inch.
As sewage backs up, water gushes upward, and cars that cannot withstand the strong current are washed away as they are.
[Park Hyung-su / Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do: So much water came down from the mountain that it pushed the car away. Water was pouring down like a waterfall, rushing down the road and everywhere else.]
The sight of water rising by the minute overnight was also captured on camera.
A building entrance where the current rushed up to an adult's ankle height was suddenly submerged by about half.
One vehicle is buried under the current, making it hard to even recognize its shape.

Even as morning came, the situation did not improve.
The underground parking lot of an apartment complex is completely flooded, with only the tops of vehicles barely visible, and elevators have even stopped working due to a power outage.
[Kim Dong-hee / Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do: Including the emergency stairs, the entire underground parking lot was submerged, causing a power outage across all households, leaving everyone stranded and unable to go anywhere.]
Unable to withstand the rapid currents, store windows in various parts of the streets were shattered to pieces.
[Han Seung-heon / Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do: The water came down to a degree that was somewhat frightening. I was shocked for a moment, and I felt my heart sink, thinking that something terrible might happen.]
Tourists who visited Geoje for the holiday also had their hearts in their mouths due to the heavy rain.
[Yoon Ye-rin / Jongno-gu, Seoul: It rained so hard that I couldn't see ahead at all. It rained really heavily as if a hole had been torn open, and a lot of bricks flew around and ended up under cars.]
Fire authorities explained that the damage from flooding appeared to have worsened as this torrential downpour coincided with the high tide period of the sea.
The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters decided to urgently provide 3 billion won in special local grants and 40 million won in disaster relief project funds to heavy rain-affected areas including Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do.
