Representative Kim Min-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea has been elected as the second ruling party leader of the Lee Jae-myung administration.

During the party convention held at the Daejeon Convention Center today (the 17th), the newly elected leader Kim secured a final vote rate of 54.08%, defeating candidate Chung Cheong-rae (45.92%) to claim victory.

Kim captured the party leadership following a runoff vote utilizing a preferential voting system, after failing to secure a majority in the first round of voting.

The preferential voting system requires voters to specify their 1st to 3rd choice candidates in order of preference. If no candidate wins a majority, the votes for the second-choice candidates of voters whose first choice was the lowest-ranked candidate are added up to determine the winner.

This party leader election determined the rankings by combining 70% of votes from delegates and registered party members with 30% of public opinion polls.

In the Supreme Council election, the winners in order of ranking were Representatives Choi Min-hee (two-term), Park Sun-won (first-term), Seo Mi-hwa (first-term), Lee Seong-yoon (first-term), and Han Min-su (first-term).
