A hurricane warning has been issued for the Big Island, the largest island in Hawaii, as Hurricane Lala approaches the U.S. state.

Accompanied by torrential rain and winds of up to 161 kilometers per hour, the storm knocked down utility poles and power lines, leaving about 60,000 households—roughly one-third of the Big Island's total population—temporarily without power. Hilo International Airport and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport were also closed.

U.S. meteorological authorities reported that nearly 40 centimeters of rain has already fallen on the Big Island and Maui, with more than 20 centimeters of additional rainfall expected, prompting warnings for floods and landslides.
