A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Flores Island in the Lesser Sunda Islands of eastern Indonesia at around 5:58 a.m. local time today (August 15).

Citing rescue officials, AFP reported that at least 20 people have been killed and six others injured so far.

Following the earthquake, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency briefly issued a tsunami warning, prompting thousands of residents and tourists on Flores Island to evacuate.
