A man in his 20s who deliberately crashed into cars changing lanes while driving luxury vehicles such as Porsches and BMWs to collect insurance payouts has been sentenced to prison.

The Busan District Court announced that Judge Park Joo-young of Criminal Division 3 sentenced a man identified as A, who was indicted on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud, to 10 months in prison.

A was indicted on charges of intentionally ramming a taxi that was changing lanes in front of him while driving a Porsche in Sasang-gu, Busan, in April 2021, and then processing it like a normal traffic accident to collect 13.28 million won in insurance payouts.

In January 2024, he also pocketed about 4.54 million won in insurance money by hitting a Tucson vehicle with a BMW, and in July 2023, he was charged with intentionally slamming into an 8-ton cargo truck changing lanes while driving a tow truck, taking about 5.27 million won.

A's defense claimed it was an unavoidable traffic accident, but the court ruled it an intentional crash based on an appraisal by the National Forensic Service and dashcam footage.

A was previously sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for two years in 2023 for insurance fraud.

The court stated, "Despite having a prior record of insurance fraud, he committed another offense, denied some of the crimes, and showed no remorse," adding, "Only a portion of the damage has been recovered, so punishment commensurate with his criminal responsibility is inevitable."
