The welcome rain originally forecast for Sunday has arrived a bit sooner. Rain will continue nationwide throughout the holiday weekend, starting tomorrow, Liberation Day (August 15). Up to 200mm of heavy rain is expected in the southern coastal regions.

In China, where the 13th typhoon Dolphin made landfall, the typhoon dissipated on the 11th, but the moisture it brought along remained in China.

Satellite imagery confirms that strong rain clouds are forming in eastern China today as well.

A new low-pressure system has formed from the leftover moisture left behind by the typhoon, and this low-pressure system is moving northeast toward South Korea.

Earlier than initially forecast, rain is expected to begin in Jeju Island tomorrow morning, expand to Gyeongnam and Jeonnam in the afternoon, and spread to the southern regions and Chungcheong by night.

With a large volume of moisture flowing in, localized showers are also expected in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province.

From tomorrow through the day after tomorrow, very heavy rainfall of up to 200mm is forecast for the southern coast of Gyeongnam and Mount Jirisan, and 150mm for the southern coast of Jeonnam and mountainous areas of Jeju Island.

Rainfall of 50 to 150mm is expected in Gyeongnam, 50 to 100mm in Jeonnam, 30 to 80mm in Jeonbuk and Gyeongbuk, and 20 to 60mm in Chungcheong.

From Sunday dawn to morning, torrential rain of 30 to 50mm per hour could pour over the southern coast, accompanied by strong gusts of up to 55 km/h.

If the rain falls as forecast, it is expected to help alleviate droughts in the southern regions, but preparations must also be made for potential damage from strong winds and flash downpours.

Starting Sunday, as the low-pressure system moves closer to the Korean Peninsula, rain will fall nationwide, with 5 to 30mm of rain expected in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province.

This rain is expected to continue until Monday, a alternative public holiday, and stop as the low-pressure system moves out into the East Sea on Monday night.
