The season opener for Spanish La Liga club Celta Vigo has been postponed due to the poor condition of the stadium pitch.

La Liga announced that it has agreed with both clubs and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to postpone the 2026-2027 La Liga Round 1 match between Celta Vigo and Osasuna, which was originally scheduled to take place on the 16th at Balaidos Stadium in Vigo, Spain.

According to Celta Vigo, the pitch was damaged by a fungal disease, and restoration efforts were delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions over the past few days, ultimately leading to the postponement of the match.

The match will now be held on the 27th.

However, Osasuna strongly protested the rescheduled date, arguing that the new schedule puts them at a disadvantage.

In a statement, Osasuna said, "We understand the situation where, despite Celta Vigo's efforts, the match could not be played on the scheduled date." However, they added, "As Osasuna and our fans are clearly the ones most severely impacted, it would be logical to find a new venue for the match or set a new date acceptable to both clubs."

The club further claimed, "We had agreed with Celta that September 24 or 25, during the international break, would be the most appropriate dates as they do not strain either team's schedule and provide adequate recovery time for the players. Yet, La Liga and the RFEF unilaterally set the date despite knowing about this agreement between the two clubs."
