Son Heung-min of LAFC was held scoreless for the third consecutive game in the cup tournament, but he successfully converted his penalty shootout kick to keep his team's hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive.

Having failed to record an attacking point in his last two matches against Mexican teams in the cup tournament, Son was once again unable to find the scoreboard today (August 13).

He provided a team-high five key passes, but his teammates' shots were repeatedly denied by the opposing goalkeeper. In the 27th minute of the second half, his own right-footed one-touch shot and another left-footed shot five minutes later both narrowly missed breaking through the goal.

With regulation ending in a 1-1 draw and leading directly into a penalty shootout, Son stepped up as the second kicker, completely fooling the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net to help lead his side to a 5-3 victory.

With 7 points, including two shootout wins, LAFC ranked third among Major League Soccer teams participating in the cup tournament, keeping alive their hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals, which feature the top four teams.
