A man in his 20s who wandered around downtown Daejeon carrying weapons and engaged in a standoff with police at his home has been apprehended.

The Daejeon Dunsan Police Station announced that it is investigating a man in his 20s, identified as A, after arresting him on charges of carrying a weapon in a public place and obstruction of official duties.

A is suspected of wandering near a park in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon at around 10:00 PM yesterday (August 11) with weapons in both hands and swinging them at trees and other objects.

Police were dispatched following a report from a citizen, but A had already left the scene.

When police traced his movements and arrived at his residence, A locked the door and engaged in a standoff with police for over an hour, throwing glass bottles and other items out of the window.

It was found that at the time, A was wearing a homemade plastic stab-proof vest and holding a chainsaw and a shield in both hands.

Police deployed a SWAT team, which descended by rope from the rooftop to enter the building, and apprehended A at around 1:10 AM today.

Police investigation revealed that A was already wanted by authorities including the Busan Bukbu Police Station on charges of obstruction of business.

A reportedly stated during police questioning that he "carried the weapons to practice martial arts."

Police plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the crime against A.
