A multi-vehicle collision involving three dump trucks in Nowon-gu, Seoul, last June was caused by drowsy driving, police investigations revealed.

The Nowon Police Station in Seoul announced today (August 12) that the cause of the accident—which occurred at around 7:00 a.m. on June 29 at Hwarangdae Intersection in Nowon-gu, when a dump truck violated a signal and crashed into two other dump trucks making a left turn, injuring two people—was drowsy driving.

Although the driver of the vehicle, identified as A, claimed there was a malfunction in the vehicle brakes, an analysis by the National Forensic Service found no functional defects in the vehicle.

Police plan to forward driver A to prosecutors on charges of signal violation under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.

A police official stated, "Sufficient sleep and rest are necessary before long-hour driving to prevent accidents," adding, "Large freight vehicles have long braking distances and wide blind spots, so drivers must exercise defensive driving by securing a sufficient safe distance."
