A private belonging to the 1st Marine Division in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, who went AWOL (absent without leave) from his base, was apprehended four hours later.

According to the Marine Corps on the 11th, Private A of the 1st Marine Division scaled the fence and deserted the base on the afternoon of the 8th.

After fellow Marines noticed he was missing, they reported his disappearance and confirmed his desertion by reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

In response, military police coordinated with the railway police and secured the custody of Private A, who was traveling on a train, four hours into his flight.

Military authorities stated that Private A was wearing his military uniform, but was not carrying any weapons.

A Marine Corps official said, "The military police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the desertion and plan to take measures in accordance with laws and regulations."
