▲ Dump truck crosses center line and collides head-on
Police are investigating a head-on collision that killed three college students as they were driving home after finishing a film shoot.
According to the Anseong Police Station in Gyeonggi Province on August 11, a passenger car and a dump truck collided head-on at around 4:50 a.m. on National Route 38, across from an arts university in Samjuk-myeon, Anseong.
The accident occurred when an Orlando passenger car driven by a university student in his 20s, identified as A, crossed the center line for an unknown reason while traveling straight from Iljuk Interchange toward Anseong, crashing into a dump truck coming from the opposite direction.
The crash killed driver A, along with two arts university students in the back seat—a man in his 20s named B and a woman named C.
Students B and C were broadcasting majors at the university and had hitched a ride in A's car, who was a broadcasting major at another university, when the tragedy struck.
The three victims were reportedly heading back to their respective homes, including studio apartments near their campus, after finishing a film shoot in Anseong with about 20 other students just before the accident.
National Route 38 across from the arts university is a four-lane road with a median barrier in place. However, the specific accident site lacked a median barrier due to its proximity to a crosswalk and an intersection.
As a result, there were no collision-prevention facilities to block A's vehicle after it crossed the center line for unknown reasons, which is believed to have led to the fatal crash.
Police stated that the damage to the accident vehicle was severe, making it difficult to immediately determine whether a dashcam was present.
Police plan to check with the vehicle owner for any internal storage devices and seek consent to obtain data from the event data recorder (EDR).
The other vehicle involved, the dump truck, was not equipped with a dashcam, so authorities plan to secure and analyze footage from nearby CCTV cameras.
In addition, police plan to check for alcohol or drug consumption by analyzing blood samples from the deceased.
The driver of the dump truck told police that the Orlando vehicle crossed over the center line.
A police official said, "We will investigate the exact circumstances by questioning bereaved families, friends, and acquaintances."
