Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-kwan stated regarding the Honam semiconductor cluster, "With the goal of completing the first semiconductor fab by 2029, we have decided to swiftly push forward with the creation of a national industrial complex and the establishment of complex plans, centered around the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport."

Minister Kim made the remarks while reporting the results of the public-private joint inspection meeting on the three major mega-projects during a Cabinet meeting held at the Government Complex-Sejong today (the 11th).

The government plans to temporarily relocate the operations of the Gwangju military airport designated as the site for the Honam semiconductor cluster to another military airport by mid-2028 to accelerate the operation of the semiconductor cluster.

In addition, the government plans to support the establishment of power and water infrastructure by utilizing regional renewable energy, energy storage systems, combined heat and power, and liquefied natural gas generation, as well as shortening the construction period for the first-stage underground power lines.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are pursuing large-scale investments to build two semiconductor fabs each in Honam, totaling four fabs.
