President Lee Jae-myung stated, "We must actively review the revision of the minimum housing standards from the perspective of climate disasters."

Presiding over the 35th Cabinet meeting at the Government Complex-Sejong today (the 11th), President Lee made the remarks and said, "There is a need to speed up efforts to improve non-dwelling accommodations such as gowiswons, vinyl greenhouses, and shacks."

This reflects the assessment that as we enter the era of "climate disasters"—marked by increasingly severe heatwaves, extreme heavy rainfall, and cold snaps occurring more frequently, alongside unpredictable climate patterns—efforts to improve systems across society are necessary.

President Lee also pointed out, "There are many citizens left in blind spots of protection due to housing measures that lack foundational regulations or clear responsible entities."

The minimum housing standards mentioned by President Lee are "standards necessary for citizens to lead a pleasant and livable life." Established in 2011, they set the minimum living space at 14 square meters for a single-person household, 26 square meters for a couple, 36 square meters for a couple and one child, and 43 square meters for a couple and two children, which has prompted criticism that they are somewhat detached from reality.
