Leading Chinese tech companies like Tencent are clustered in Shenzhen, often called China's Silicon Valley. Recently, these companies are focusing not only on cutting-edge industries but also on eco-friendly development.

Beijing Correspondent Han Sang-woo visited Shenzhen.

In the middle of a downtown area lined with skyscrapers, an ultra-large forest is situated.

The forest, stretching from the city center to the coast, is densely packed with trees, and various birds, including cranes, fly along the shoreline.

It is a coastal forest heavily planted with mangrove trees, which have a high carbon absorption rate, spanning an area of 3 square kilometers.

The Shenzhen municipal government has designated 970 square kilometers, nearly half of the city's total area, as protected zones, including this forest.

Cutting-edge tech companies have all stepped up for efficient environmental management.

DJI, which accounts for 70% of the global drone market, monitors the forest with drones and collects ecological information to report to relevant authorities.

[DJI Official : This drone can identify the chlorophyll distribution of crops. It is mainly used alongside agricultural drones. The analytical maps captured by drones show areas with sluggish crop growth and high pest occurrence rates.]

Drones can also fly carrying water to extinguish small-scale fires.

In Shenzhen, known as China's Silicon Valley, high-tech industry players in AI chips, drones, and robotics are sparing no investment in eco-friendly sectors such as forest and river protection.

Electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has stepped up to introduce electric vehicles aiming to become a "carbon-neutral city" by 2035.

[Ni Ping / Shenzhen Citizen : They are all electric vehicles. Even cargo trucks are electric trucks. Taxis and buses are all new energy vehicles. The entire city of Shenzhen is like that.]

Downtown substations have also been moved underground or converted into ecological parks to minimize magnetic field generation.

The magnetic field level inside the substation is merely 0.01 microtesla, which is one-hundredth the level of a hair dryer.

Ahead of the APEC summit to be held in Shenzhen this coming November, China is revealing its ambition to lead the world in eco-friendliness as well.
