Record-breaking heat nearing 40°C (104°F) is hitting the western regions.

Today is Ipchu, the traditional solar term marking the beginning of autumn.

Intense heat will continue in the western regions today as well.

Seoul's daytime high is expected to soar to 39°C (102°F), with Yeoju and Jeonju also surging to 39°C (102°F).

However, starting from the weekend, the high-pressure system positioned over the Korean Peninsula will shift slightly to the northwest, easing the most extreme heat somewhat.

Even so, heatwave-level conditions will persist, so you will still need to take good care of your health.

Rain is forecasted for the east coast regions affected by easterly winds over the weekend.

In particular, heavy rain of more than 150 mm is expected to concentrate in the mountainous areas and east coast of Gangwon Province.

Please make thorough preparations to prevent any rain-related damage.

Tomorrow, Saturday, sudden showers may pour down in Seoul and various other areas.

The ultraviolet index will rise to very high levels today.

Meanwhile, ozone concentrations, which are harmful to the respiratory system, will rise to very high levels mainly in the western regions.

The rain in the east coast regions will continue until Monday.
