U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the 6th (local time) to ban granting U.S. citizenship to babies born through so-called birth tourism.

President Trump held a signing ceremony at the White House on this day and signed the executive order containing these measures.

According to U.S. online media outlet Axios, under this executive order, children born to women who entered the United States under false pretenses for the purpose of birth tourism will not be able to obtain U.S. citizenship.

The same applies to babies born in the U.S. by diplomatic mission staff working in the U.S. on behalf of foreign governments.

Also targeted are children born in the U.S. or U.S. territories to individuals classified as belonging to hostile nations, including groups designated as terrorist organizations by U.S. federal authorities.

Axios reported that children born in the U.S. through birth tourism number from a few thousand to tens of thousands.

This executive order is part of the Trump administration's immigration policy aimed at preventing children born to foreign parents residing in the U.S. temporarily or illegally from acquiring citizenship.

It is interpreted as an intention to maintain policy continuity while the executive order banning birthright citizenship faces a roadblock in the Supreme Court, and to present it as an achievement to rally supporters ahead of the November midterm elections.

President Trump signed an executive order banning birthright citizenship upon returning to office early last year, but on June 30, the Supreme Court put a brake on it, ruling that under the 14th Amendment, children born in the United States are automatically granted citizenship.
