Short track men's national team ace Lim Jong-eon (Goyang City Hall) is facing the risk of a severe penalty after violating whereabouts reporting rules for out-of-competition doping tests.

According to the Korean Skating Union and Lim's management agency 700 Creators, Lim has been subjected to disciplinary procedures after committing three whereabouts reporting violations for doping tests conducted by the International Testing Agency (ITA) over the past year.

Elite athletes are required to register their whereabouts information, such as training locations and residences, into the Anti-Doping Administration and Management System (ADAMS) for unannounced doping tests.

Doping control officers make unannounced visits to conduct tests based on the information registered by athletes.

Athletes who are not present at the reported location receive a warning for a whereabouts failure, and accumulating three violations within a 12-month period can lead to a suspension of up to two years for evading doping tests.

There are numerous cases of athletes receiving heavy penalties due to whereabouts reporting violations.

French Olympic taekwondo gold medalist Althéa Laurin received a 20-month suspension for whereabouts violations in June last year, and Olympic swimming gold medalist Ahmed Hafnaoui of Tunisia was handed a 21-month ban for the same reason.

Similar cases have also occurred domestically.

South Korean badminton star Lee Yong-dae was suspended for one year in 2014 for violating doping whereabouts reporting obligations, but the penalty was overturned following an appeal after administrative errors by the Badminton Korea Association were confirmed.

Lim reportedly received his first warning in February, ahead of the opening of the 2026 Milano-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, for failing to register his whereabouts information.

In June, he reportedly failed to undergo testing because he mistook the national team training period and registered the Jincheon National Training Center as his location, and he recorded his third violation last month after failing to properly update his whereabouts changes.

If Lim receives a suspension from competition, he will be stripped of his national team status and will be unable to normally compete in the 2026-2027 season events.

Lim is the national team ace who topped the national team selection trials as a high school student last year and won one silver medal and one bronze medal at the 2026 Milano-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics.

However, he is now facing a major crisis in his athletic career due to these whereabouts reporting violations.
