A passenger plane in China was forced to change its destination and make an emergency landing after a portable battery carried by a passenger caught fire during flight.

According to Chang An Airlines, the fire broke out around 10:30 PM on the 4th inside the cabin of a flight traveling from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to Guiyang, Guizhou Province.

Cabin crew members promptly responded in accordance with in-flight battery fire response procedures to extinguish the fire, and no casualties were reported, the airline stated.

Instead of heading to its original destination of Guiyang, the aircraft rerouted to Wuhan Tianhe International Airport in Hubei Province, making an emergency landing at around 10:50 PM.

Chang An Airlines explained, "Neither passengers nor crew members were injured, and there were no abnormalities with the aircraft," adding, "An inspection confirmed the aircraft's safety and operational airworthiness."

The airline further urged, "When traveling by air, please refrain from carrying portable batteries if possible, and if unavoidable, make sure to check that the product meets relevant standards, such as the national '3C certification'."

Authorities in China are strengthening safety regulations amid a series of in-flight portable battery ignition incidents.

Chinese authorities ban the bring-on of portable batteries that lack the national "3C certification" or are subject to recalls.
