Coupang Inc., the parent company of Coupang, announced on the 4th (local time) that it received a pre-notice of tax assessment amounting to approximately 300 billion won ($208 million) from the National Tax Service in June.

In its second-quarter consolidated earnings report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the same day, Coupang Inc. stated, "The National Tax Service has completed tax audits on corporate and value-added tax filings for certain South Korean subsidiaries from 2021 to 2025 and issued a tax audit result notice," making the announcement.

The additional tax payment requested by the National Tax Service in the notice is $208 million, including penalties and interest, and the company stated its position that it disagrees with the disposition.

Stating that it disagrees with the pre-notified tax assessment in the report, the company added, "We plan to actively explain our position through available administrative relief procedures and judicial litigation if necessary."

Previously, the National Tax Service initiated a special tax audit targeting Coupang in late December of last year, immediately following Coupang's personal information leakage incident, and recently concluded the audit to notify the company of the results.

The issues raised in the notice primarily focus on transfer pricing and transaction prices between Coupang and Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS). The company also expressed confidence, concluding that its position is more likely to be accepted during the appeal process.

Meanwhile, regarding the recent logistics center fire losses in Seoknam-dong, Incheon, the company stated, "The total book value of the facility's self-held inventory and fixed assets prior to the fire, including estimated payment obligations related to sellers' inventory stored in the facility, is estimated at approximately 350 billion won ($246 million)."

This loss is scheduled to be reflected starting from the third-quarter earnings, and while insurance claims will be pursued, the company noted that there may be additional liabilities and expenses that are currently unidentified or unquantifiable.
