Police are investigating the death of a male high school student who collapsed unconscious during a break after a sparring session at a kickboxing gym in Busan.
According to the Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters on August 4, an official found 18-year-old B collapsed in the restroom of a kickboxing gym in Busan referred to as A at around 8:40 PM on July 9 and reported it to 119.
Student B, who frequently visited the gym as a hobby, was engaged in a sparring match consisting of six two-minute rounds with a man in his 20s named C, a fellow gym member.
Reports indicate that when student B left his seat during a break, saying he was going to the restroom, and did not return, an official went to check and found him.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene, student B was unconscious, with only breathing and a pulse remaining.
Rush-transported to a hospital, student B died 12 days later on July 21.
Police have requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service while investigating the sparring partner C and gym officials to determine if there was any intent or negligence involved.
A police official stated, "An analysis of CCTV footage and other evidence suggests that the sparring session was not excessively violent," adding, "However, as this appears to be an unusual accident, we are investigating the specific circumstances."
