Accidents resulting in fatalities while gathering freshwater snails are occurring continuously.

One must never let their guard down just because the water is shallow. Take a look at the report.

It has been found that at least seven people have died in accidents related to gathering freshwater snails over the past week.

On August 2, a man in his 60s was found dead in a stream in Goesan-gun, North Chungcheong Province, holding a freshwater snail gathering net. On July 30, a woman in his (or her) 60s drowned while gathering freshwater snails in Geumsan, South Chungcheong Province.

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, as many as 32 people have died while gathering freshwater snails during the summer over the past three years.

About half of these accidents occurred in the month of August.

Freshwater snails mainly inhabit relatively shallow streams, but the uneven bottoms and slippery moss-covered areas pose a high risk of safety accidents.

Authorities have urged that when gathering freshwater snails, people must always operate in groups and wear life jackets as well as non-slip shoes.
