Chinese media outlets have reported that ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), which is challenging the global DRAM semiconductor market led by Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron, is nearing the completion of research and development (R&D) validation for next-generation mobile LPDDR6 DRAM.
Citing industry sources on August 1 (local time), Chinese media outlet Yicai reported on the LPDDR6 development status of a core CXMT affiliate, describing it as a crucial stage ahead of mass production.
LPDDR is a DRAM standard used in mobile products such as smartphones and tablets, featuring low-voltage operation characteristics to minimize power consumption.
For LPDDR to be released, it must go through stages including single-chip (die) validation, R&D validation, small-scale production introduction validation, and official mass production.
Yicai explained that back in March, the Chinese industry discussed that CXMT was actively pursuing LPDDR6 products, had already sent samples to major clients, and could potentially unveil and begin mass-producing the products in the second half of this year.
Yicai stated that CXMT's LPDDR6 features specifications such as a design specification speed of 12.8 Gbps (gigabits per second), with noticeable improvements in reliability, availability, and maintainability compared to the existing LPDDR5X (an enhanced version of LPDDR5).
Currently, CXMT's main products are DDR5 and LPDDR5. According to the prospectus issued during its initial public offering (IPO), mass production began for LPDDR5 in 2023, DDR5 in 2024, and LPDDR5X in 2025.
Last year, the proportions of revenue accounted for by the DDR and LPDDR series in CXMT's total revenue were 31.87% and 66.43%, respectively, with the majority of revenue coming from these general-purpose DRAM product lines.
Amid this situation, competition within the global DRAM industry for LPDDR6 is also accelerating.
SK Hynix announced in March that it had succeeded in developing a 16Gb (gigabit) LPDDR6 DRAM applying the 10-nanometer-class 6th-generation (1c) process, stating, "We will complete preparations for mass production in the first half of the year and supply products starting in the second half to build a general-purpose memory product lineup optimized for artificial intelligence (AI) implementations."
Samsung Electronics showcased LPDDR6 products at the CES 2026 information technology exhibition in January, but has not yet disclosed the exact timing for mass production.
Meanwhile, Micron stated during an earnings conference call in June that future DRAM demand is expected to shift from LPDDR5 and DDR5 to LPDDR6 and DDR6, but has not yet released progress reports or mass production plans regarding LPDDR6 products.
Chinese media outlets are closely watching SK Hynix's push into LPDDR6 mass production and the possibility of Chinese tech firm Xiaomi becoming one of its primary customers.
Chinese media outlets such as Jiemian interpreted that SK Hynix is rushing to curb CXMT's rapid growth by prioritizing the supply of the latest LPDDR6 to Chinese smartphone companies like Xiaomi to secure an early advantage in the next-generation memory market.
The analysis suggests that SK Hynix, being ahead in technological prowess, aims to secure clients first so that even if CXMT catches up later, it will not lose its foothold in the market.
Yicai added, "If CXMT completes R&D validation for its LPDDR6 and enters mass production in the second half of this year, it will compete directly with SK Hynix."
