Temperatures in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, soared to 41.4°C (107°F) today (the 31st), breaking the all-time national high temperature record as historic heatwaves continue, causing casualties and agricultural and fisheries damage to snowball.

Heat-related deaths are continuing, livestock fatalities from the heat have surpassed 410,000, and some island regions are even implementing water rationing.

At around 1:40 PM today, the temperature in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, rose to 41.4°C (107°F).

This is the highest temperature recorded since weather observations began in Yangsan in 2008, and it is also the all-time high among the 97 climate statistics observation points nationwide managed by the Korea Meteorological Administration.

The problem is that heat-related illnesses are increasing due to widespread extreme heat, with temperatures in Busan and Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, also exceeding 38°C (100°F).

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, a total of approximately 1,600 heat-related illness patients, including 12 deaths, have been reported nationwide from May 15 to July 29.

In addition, drought is rapidly intensifying in the Yeongnam region due to a combination of extreme heat and a lack of precipitation.

Precipitation in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do over the past month stood at 181.0 mm, which is only about 70 percent of normal levels.

The drought alert levels for Andong Dam and Imha Dam, multipurpose dams in the Nakdong River basin, have been raised to "Caution," while Unmun Dam maintains its "Severe" level. Meanwhile, residents in some island areas of Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, where metropolitan water supplies are not available, are suffering from a shortage of domestic water, with water rationing reportedly underway.

Damage to livestock farms from the heat is also rapidly mounting. From May 15 to the 30th, the number of livestock that died from the heat, including pigs, chickens, and ducks, exceeded 419,000.

Damage to farmed fish has also surpassed 130,000, which is more than nine times higher than the approximately 14,000 during the same period last year.

As heatwave damage continues nationwide, Prime Minister Han Sung-sook urged efforts to minimize heat-related damage, stating, "There is a possibility that the heavy heatwave warning could be expanded after the weekend, so it looks like we will need to remain on high alert this week."
