KOSPI Surges 17.9%, Breaking All-Time Records for Largest Daily Gain and Percentage Increase

The KOSPI bounced back from a three-day plunge, soaring in a record-breaking rally.

Today (the 31st), the KOSPI closed up 1,001.89 points, or 17.91%, at 6,595.45 compared to the previous trading day.

Both the percentage increase and the point increase mark all-time highs.

The previous record for the second-largest percentage increase was 11.95%, set on October 30, 2008, during the global financial crisis.

The previous record for the second-largest point increase was 612.52 points, recorded on June 9.

The index opened up 64.23 points, or 1.15%, at 5,657.79, quickly reclaiming the 6,000 threshold.

During the session, it spiked as high as 6,630.77, pushing the gain to 18.54%.

As the domestic stock market surged, buy sidecars were successively triggered on both the main KOSPI and secondary KOSDAQ markets during early trading.

The KOSDAQ index also finished up 74.98 points, or 11.63%, at 719.76.
