As the heat wave intensifies nationwide, the scorching temperatures in the Gyeongnam region are proving particularly severe.

Yesterday (July 29), the temperature in Yangsan hit 40.3°C (105°F), marking the first time temperatures have exceeded 40°C (104°F) this summer.

Busan also broke its highest temperature record in about 120 years.

Consequently, additional severe heat wave warnings are set to be issued for parts of the Gyeongnam region.

With the Korean Peninsula covered by a double layer of high-pressure systems and fueled by hot, humid westerly winds, the extreme heat will continue today, with daytime temperatures in Gyeongnam soaring up to 39°C (102°F).

Looking at detailed daytime highs, Gangneung will reach 37°C (99°F), while Seoul, Daejeon, and Gwangju will climb to 34°C (93°F).

As tropical night advisories remain in effect for most regions, current temperatures stand at 28.4°C (83°F) in Jeju and 25.6°C (78°F) in Seoul. Tropical nights are expected to persist for over three weeks in Jeju and over a week in Seoul.

Next week, daytime temperatures in Seoul are projected to surge up to the 36°C (97°F) mark.
