Approximately 2.5 million pyeong of the Gwangju Military Airport site has been preferentially designated as a candidate site for the Honam regional semiconductor high-tech national industrial complex.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced today (the 29th) that the site was finalized as a candidate following deliberation and resolution by the Industrial Site Policy Committee.

This candidate designation is part of the government's three major mega-project promotion plans, following a request by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for national industrial complex designation based on investment demand from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport stated that the 2.5 million pyeong scale was preferentially designated considering the demand from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, and that it plans to review further expansion of the candidate site to accommodate a semiconductor industrial ecosystem and residential functions.

The vision is to create not only production facilities but also an industrial ecosystem where partner companies and research institutes are clustered, transforming it into a corporate-style high-tech city equipped with housing, education, culture, and transportation functions.

Kim Yi-tak, First Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "We will closely cooperate with companies, related ministries, and local governments to promptly devise additional expansion measures and develop the Honam regional national industrial complex into a globally competitive semiconductor corporate-style high-tech city."
