A Chinese national in Jeju who drove recklessly, even crossing the center line while trying to evade a seatbelt crackdown, has been arrested by the police. All four people in the vehicle turned out to be undocumented immigrants.

A patrol car pursues a white van.

The van continues its reckless and dangerous driving, swerving across the center line.

The pursuit began after police on patrol spotted all four occupants failing to wear their seatbelts.

[An Gyeong-hyeon, Senior Patrol Officer, Team 5, Nohyeong District Unit: We gave orders to pull over, but the vehicle ignored them and fled by speeding, violating traffic signals, and making illegal U-turns. It was a very dangerous situation because they fled while driving recklessly.]

After a pursuit of over 1 kilometer, the van's escape route was blocked.

People suddenly jumped out of the vehicle and scattered in all directions, leading to a physical struggle with the police in the middle of a 7-lane two-way road.

With local residents stepping in to help with the arrest, all four individuals who attempted to flee were caught at the scene.

[Lee Yeong-ho, Resident Who Assisted in the Arrest (Member of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Autonomous Police Commission): (The police and the driver) were rolling around wrestling on the ground. So I went over there, pinned his neck, and twisted his hands to help make the arrest.]

Investigations revealed that all of those apprehended are Chinese nationals staying in the country illegally and working as daily laborers in Jeju.

The driver, in his 30s, did not even have a driver's license.

The Chinese national reportedly led police on a high-speed chase of over 1.3 kilometers, driving recklessly at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour.

The police have booked the driver on charges of unlicensed and reckless driving.

Meanwhile, the three accompanying passengers have been handed over to the Jeju Immigration and Foreigner Office.
