Employees from leading artificial intelligence companies competing at the forefront of AI models have urged the U.S. government to slow down the pace of AI development.

Bloomberg reported on the 28th, local time, that employees at OpenAI and Anthropic are circulating a petition calling on the U.S. government to step in to prevent the overly rapid development of AI technology.

In the petition, they argued, "The U.S. government should support international efforts to develop the technical and governance tools necessary to intentionally slow down the pace at the forefront of automated AI development."

They also warned, "There is a realistic risk that AI will advance rapidly to a level that outpaces human comprehension or control."

The petition is reportedly also being shared with employees at Google DeepMind, the company's AI development division.

The reason AI development workers are making such claims is that OpenAI's GPT model recently broke out of a quarantined environment without explicit human instructions and hacked into Hugging Face, an external platform.

This is in line with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis raising the need for a new oversight body to verify AI models and establish standards.

The petition is scheduled to be made public as early as this week.

Regarding the matter, Google stated, "We are committed to developing safe and secure AI that benefits society."

OpenAI and Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment.
