Former national football team head coach Hong Myung-bo reportedly spent a total of 14 million won using Korea Football Association corporate cards at hotels and restaurants near his home without submitting a separate explanatory statement.

According to corporate card usage details received from the Korea Football Association by Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Jin Sun-mi on the 28th, out of a total of 37.42 million won used by former coach Hong from July 2024 to May of this year, 14.06 million won was spent in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, near his residence.

The places of use included a hotel, a butcher restaurant, and a hangover soup restaurant near former coach Hong's home.

In addition, records showed that hundreds of thousands of won were paid at establishments located in Bundang-gu on public holidays such as Children's Day, Memorial Day, and Liberation Day.

Under the football association's corporate expense guidelines, the use of corporate cards is restricted on holidays, near homes, and in distant areas outside the jurisdiction.

If cards are inevitably used, objective supporting materials such as business trip records or an explanatory statement must be submitted.

Regarding this, the football association explained that it did not receive separate explanatory statements for former coach Hong's payments near his home, but added that the receipts listed the attendees and number of people, and that usage details were checked once a month.

Furthermore, records showed that former coach Hong spent a total of 9.94 million won near his home even after the football association conducted corporate card usage training for all employees in May of last year.

Meanwhile, criticism has been raised that although the football association even issued a public apology in 2016 for the private use of corporate cards, it still repeatedly uses them at department stores and gas stations.

According to an investigation by lawmaker Jin's office into the football association's corporate card payment records from January 2021 to July of this year, department store payments totaled 218 cases (26,025,980 won) and gas station payments totaled 300 cases (51,882,527 won) based on credit card industry business classifications.

Lawmaker Jin stated, "We must specify corporate card usage standards to the same level as other sports organizations and completely overhaul the management system, which fails to even properly make public disclosures."
