President Lee Jae-myung emphasized on the 27th (local time) that the principle of maintaining a free, fair, and predictable trade order is a value that the international community must share, in response to the U.S. recently imposing new tariffs on 60 countries, including South Korea, based on Section 301 of the Trade Act.

President Lee, who is on a state visit to Brazil, made the remarks in response to a question asking if there are international means to jointly respond to the new U.S. tariffs during an interview published in the local daily O Globo on this day.

President Lee stated, "The World Trade Organization (WTO) remains the most comprehensive and legitimate multilateral consultative body where member countries can engage in dialogue, resolve disputes, and expand cooperation based on international trade norms." However, he added, "It is true that criticisms exist pointing out the WTO has not adequately responded to the changing trade environment," and noted, "Moving forward, it is important to strengthen the functions of the WTO and pursue reforms tailored to the current changed environment."

Regarding unstable international situations such as the Middle East conflict, President Lee said, "Close cooperation and solidarity among nations are more important than ever," adding, "Based on diplomacy where self-reliance, alliances, and solidarity form a virtuous cycle, South Korea will navigate the waves of complex global crises together with the international community."

On inter-Korean relations, he stated, "I feel deep regret that we have not yet achieved a decisive breakthrough," and vowed, "We will make every effort to foster favorable diplomatic conditions for the resumption of dialogue between the South and the North, as well as between North Korea and the U.S."

Regarding the Mercosur (Southern Common Market) free trade agreement (FTA), President Lee remarked, "We will do everything possible to conclude a high-level agreement that brings practical benefits to both sides at an early date." At the same time, he added, "Since it involves sensitive market access issues and other matters, rather than predicting a specific timeline for conclusion, it is important to derive a result equipped with mutual benefit and balance."
