General Xavier Brunson, Commander of the United Nations Command and U.S. Forces Korea, stated today (the 27th), marking the 73rd anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice Agreement, "Although it is not a peace treaty, the Armistice Agreement has provided a framework that has contributed to the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula over the past 73 years."

In a message posted on his social media account X today, General Brunson made the remarks, saying, "We honor the 22 member nations of the United Nations Command (UNC) that made sacrifices together to defend freedom and the security of the Republic of Korea."

Emphasizing the sacrifice and dedication of the UN veterans, he stated, "These veterans serve as a living bridge connecting the battlefields of yesterday with the peace we protect today."

General Brunson added, "Their legacy reminds us that maintaining the armistice requires firm commitment, unwavering vigilance, and credible readiness," noting that "there is no substitute for readiness."

The Korean War, which broke out on June 25, 1950, was halted with the signing of the Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953.

The system agreed upon at the time of the armistice, including the establishment of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) extending 2 kilometers to the south and north from the MDL, has been maintained to this day.

South Korea designates this day as UN Forces Participation Day, a statutory anniversary honoring the contributions of the 22 UN sending countries that fought in the Korean War, while North Korea commemorates the day as Victory Day, a national holiday celebrating what it claims is a victory in fighting against the United States.
