A pair of orcas, known as "killer whales," were captured on camera in the middle of a hunt.

In the video showing a cooperative hunt, a female orca holds onto a dead ocean sunfish before gently releasing it, at which point a male orca rushes forward like a bullet and rams the sunfish with its head.

The sunfish was shattered into pieces by the impact as if an object had exploded, and a baby orca swam over to eat the body tissue scattering across the ocean.

Filmed in 2024 off the coast of Mexico, the footage was used by researcher Catherine Ayers of the marine research organization Beneath the Waves to study the orcas' "ram-and-shatter" behavior, which was recently published in an academic journal.
