A car drove into an LGBTQ+ event site in Berlin, Germany, on the 25th (local time), killing at least 1 person and injuring 14 others, major foreign media outlets reported.

According to police, a white van entered the Tiergarten park in Berlin near the parade route of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) LGBTQ+ event—which had drawn hundreds of thousands of people—at around 10 p.m. that day, struck multiple people, and then crashed into a tree.

Some of the injured are in critical condition with severe injuries.

The injured are receiving treatment from emergency medical personnel dispatched to the scene.

The exact motive for the crime and the identity of the suspect have not yet been confirmed, and police are currently tracking the suspect.

Police spokesperson Florian Nath stated in a video posted on the Berlin police account on X (formerly Twitter) that an intensive search is underway to find the primary suspects.

The suspect fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle.

Police told AFP that a vehicle suspected of being involved in the incident was found abandoned.

Following the accident, police and organizers completely canceled the event for safety reasons.

Police urged participants to immediately leave the venue and return home, and completely cordoned off the area where casualties occurred.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the incident, calling it an "attack on our free and open society," adding that a gathering assembled for tolerance and a peaceful Berlin was brutally attacked, while offering condolences to the victims and their families.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed that the perpetrators would be severely punished.

In a statement, he said he would strongly push to ensure that this horrifying act is thoroughly investigated and punished.

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered that day for the Berlin CSD event, one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ festivals.

Before the accident occurred, participants had been peacefully enjoying the festival by marching through downtown and dancing to music, AP reported.
