The US media outlet Axios reported that the United States and the United Kingdom plan to hold a high-level meeting in London next week to establish a multinational coalition aimed at securing the safety of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to sources cited by Axios, defense ministers and military chiefs from Western and Middle Eastern countries, including US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine, are likely to attend the meeting.

A White House official confirmed that the US and the UK hope to hold the meeting next week.

Detailed schedules for the meeting are currently under discussion and have not yet been finalized.

To ensure maritime security, the United States wants allied nations to dispatch assets such as mine sweepers, warships, and drones to the Strait of Hormuz.

"The Americans are looking for an off-ramp and they want our help," a European diplomat told Axios.

The US reportedly intends to build upon plans for a multinational maritime security coalition in the Strait of Hormuz that have been previously led by the UK and France.

However, sources noted that many countries are conditioning their participation on a cessation of hostilities within the strait to ensure that international maritime missions can be carried out safely.
